Christ We Do All Adore Thee
A survival from Latin, demonstrating the diversity of our hymnody.
Original lyrics:
Christ we do all adore THEE,
And we do praise THEE forever;
Christ we do all adore THEE,
And we do praise THEE forever;
For on the holy cross HAST THOU
The world from sin redeemed.
Christ we do all adore THEE,
And we do praise THEE forever;
Christ we do all adore THEE.
Latin Hymn, trans. Theodore Baker
Comments and Suggestions:
Although "For on the holy cross have you . . . " is most faithful to the original translation, the inverted subject-verb formulation is used in modern English mainly for questions. No query is intended here; it is a statement of fact. The renewed lyrics make the factual nature of the statement clear.
Renewal lyrics:
Christ we do all adore YOU,
And we do praise YOU forever;
Christ we do all adore YOU,
And we do praise YOU forever;
For on the CROSS YOU DIED AND YOU
[or For on the holy cross HAVE YOU]
The world from sin redeemed.
Christ we do all adore YOU,
And we do praise YOU forever;
Christ we do all adore YOU.
